Synchronicity #584

Date: Dec 2002, perhaps

Do you remember the Apple ad campaign “Think Different”? Do you remember the gianormous ad of John & Yoko draped across the Santa Monica Blvd. and Highland white building?

It was around midnight from what i remember. I was cruising around Hollywood with JSH and fabulous artist Lize Mogal. Can’t remember exactly why we were out so late in mid-week.. had we seen a flick at the New Beverly? I remember it being mid-week cuz it felt a little bit naughty to be out so late with friends on a work/school night. I remember the evening was cold and windy. Actually, super windy. So windy in fact that when we drove past the gigantic ad of John & Yoko - the Yoko portion had ripped almost completely off and Yoko was flying over Highland. I remember distinctly the sound of massive plastic cloth whipping thru the chill. The full moon. It was beautiful.

We quickly drove to Lize’s home and she grabbed her camera. We tried our best to capture the moment. Sadly, we weren’t able to grab the full effect of Yoko, free, blowing over our heads, holding her flowers.

This is what we did get.

I also like the ad juxtaposing the the other side of the (coin)building - “Just Married”

Maybe listening to Bernard Hermann while doing taxes and clearing out years of old files is NOT the best choice.

In Case You Didn't Catch it...

I surely didn't. HBO apparently did not seem to want to air the opening prayer given by Gene Robinson, the "first openly gay, non-celibate priest to be ordained a bishop in a major Christian denomination."

Lifted from the Huffington Post

"Robinson was on hand to deliver an opening prayer to the event, but this prayer went unseen by anyone watching on HBO, who provided and sponsored the coverage.

Reached for comment, a spokesperson for HBO stated that decisions regarding the timing and presentation of Robinson's remarks were made by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, and that Robinson was "not a part of our show from the start." Indeed, Robinson appeared minutes before the 2:30pm start time of the concert coverage. "

It's really a beautiful prayer.

with the whitewashing that we’re being bombarded with in regards to bush cheney’s legacy: decisions to obliterate the geneva war convention, to approve of (what 50 retired US military admirals and generals have deemed to be) torture, the warrentless wiretapping on amercian citizens, the decimation of our civil rights and helping to create the largest debt ever???!!! Not only were Cheney/Bush’s choices immoral, illegal but also are considered counter-productive. So what gives? These people should be prosecuted for war crimes! And don’t give me this bunk about “let’s just let the past be the past” and move forward...vomitron! We’ve seen this before in the press, apparently French journalists after World War 2 tried to white wash the nazi regime and say - “ooh, let’s not dwell in the past.” The world was completely able to move forward quite productively formulating the marshall plan whilst at the same time, prosecuting former nazi war criminals. I'm requesting the Obama Admin appoints a special prosecutor to investigate and indict those responsible for these war crimes. One of the most basic American values, and one we executed Nazis for, is that we don't torture. I’m simply not prepared to let “bygones be bygones!” I hope to god the Obama Admin, tackles this issue head on....If America's image is too be restored, then the new administration must understand that before we march forward into the sunlight we must exhume the ghosts of crimes past ... I suggest that if you feel the same way I do, please write to Obama and issue a formal request to investigate these blokes - Dick Cheney simply cannot get away with his evil decisions.

On January 13, 2005 the bodies of Canadian couple John and Jackie Knill were discovered on a Thailand beach resort. They were two of the many victims killed from the December 26 2004 tsunami. Weeks later a Seattle man doing relief work found a damaged camera and discarded it but kept the memory card in the camera. After downloading the images he discovered pictures of the Knill’s enjoying their vacation, as well as shots of a huge wave approaching the shore. With each picture it shows the wave getting closer and closer to shore. The last picture taken of them before the wave hit (shown above) was shot just after 8.30 am on December 26.

Interesting Fact: The Seattle man that discovered the images recognized the Knills from a missing person’s web site and contacted the couple’s two sons in Vancouver Canada. The man then drove from Seattle to Vancouver to give the sons their parent’s last images.

Stolen from the huffington post:

Almost Eight years ago when then-President-Elect Bush first visited the Clinton White House. The pictures below are from that meeting, which occurred later in the year (Dec. 19 2000) because of the disputed election.

Socotra or Soqotra (Arabic سقطرى ; Suquṭra) is a small archipelago of four islands and islets in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa some 190 nautical miles south of the Arabian peninsula, belonging to the Republic of Yemen.

Socotra is considered the "jewel" of biodiversity in the Arabian sea. The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora (which may, therefore, be vulnerable to introduced species such as goats and to climate change). Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else. Botanists rank the flora of Socotra among the ten most endangered island flora in the world. The archipelago is a site of global importance for biodiversity conservation and a possible center for ecotourism.

One of the most striking of Socotra's plants is the dragon's blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was the dragon's blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye. Another unusual plant is Dorstenia gigas.

The island was recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008. The European Union has supported such a move, calling on both UNESCO and International Organization of Protecting Environment to classify the island archipelago among the environmental heritages.
